Laura Wright
Laura was 15 when she won the BBC Radio 2 Chorister of the Year Competition at Westminster Abbey. This resulted in performances around the country, including her taking the Soloist part in John Rutter’s Requiem at St. Paul’s Cathedral. At the time she was developing a prodigious reputation as an all round sports person ,with what looked like an exciting sporting career ahead. That night in Westminster Abbey changed all that, music was to be her first choice.
Since then Laura has performed at numerous prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Arena, Twickenham, Old Trafford, 02 Arena, Royal Festival Hall, Parliament and has performed for HM The Queen, The Prime Minister and many others.
The composer and classical music composer/writer/presenter Howard Goodall mentioned Laura’s talent to Decca Records and after unwittingly auditioning for a Decca vocal talent scout she was asked to join the fledgeling female vocal quartet All Angels in 2006. Laura recorded three albums with All Angels, the first of which was the fastest classical selling album of all time and was awarded a Platinum disc. Album sales have reached over a million and All Angels were nominated for Classical Brit Award for Album of the Year in 2007.
In 2009, Laura left All Angels and won a Scholarship to the Royal College of Music to study opera where she recently completed at the Junior Kathleen Ferrier Bursary Award.
To mention Laura’s impressive list of sporting achievements is to show how difficult her decision to go into music may have been. She played county hockey (also playing for East of England), county tennis (and National Abadare cup Tennis Finals and Road to Wimbledon Finals U18's), county athletics (AAA schools athletics), county Javelin as well as holding captain of the netball, hockey and tennis teams. Laura also held the role of Corporal during her time in the Combined Cadet Core.
When the football legend Bobby Robson sadly passed away in September 2009 Laura was asked to sing a special performance of his favourite song “My Way” before the Ipswich v Newcastle United game a week later, with Bobby’s family present and both sets of fans joining in. It was after this performance that she was asked to be the official pre match singer for the Carling Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, 2011.
Back to the music, 2011, and Laura has recorded her debut solo album with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra , conducted by Barry Wordsworth. Her lifelong love of folk music is realized in the album , her selection of songs being beautifully arranged by John Rutter, Paul Mealor and Patrick Hawes, (the former two taking time out from their involvement in the Royal Wedding). Entitled “The Last Rose of Summer “, it is released on Decca Records / Classic FM Records on July 25th. It is worth mentioning that Laura did take a day off from recording the album at Angel Studios to run the London Marathon (in record time of course).
